A pair of Oklahoma City residents has learned that playing with fire can have deadly consequences. Amber Nicole Ransom, 40, and Gordon Bernard Horner, 51, have been sentenced to 10 years collectively in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm after a previous felony conviction.
The charges stem from a drive-by shooting at an Oklahoma City apartment complex on May 9, 2023. Surveillance footage identified a white sedan as the suspect vehicle, which was pulled over in a traffic stop just days later. Ransom and Horner were inside, and authorities found two handguns. A search warrant at their shared apartment turned up another firearm and several rounds of ammunition.
Through the investigation, police learned that Ransom fired several shots at the apartment from the back seat of the vehicle, which was being driven by Horner. The pair’s prior felony convictions – Ransom for robbery in the first degree, and Horner for possession of a controlled dangerous substance – made them felons in possession of firearms.
In the fall of 2023, Ransom and Horner pleaded guilty to possessing firearms. U.S. District Judge Bernard M. Jones handed down the sentences on May 22, 2024, calling the crime ‘senseless’ and a ‘reckless disregard for life.’
Ransom, 40, was sentenced to 90 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Horner, 51, received 30 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The case is the result of an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Oklahoma City Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney David R. Nichols, Jr., prosecuted the case. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of gun violence and the consequences of illegal firearm possession. As this newspaper has repeatedly highlighted, the proliferation of firearms in the hands of felons has devastating consequences for communities nationwide.
This case is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies working together to keep our communities safe. The Grimy Times will continue to shine a light on the darkest corners of gun violence and the justice system’s efforts to combat it.
