Matthew West Nix, Involuntary Manslaughter, Oklahoma 2018

Matthew West Nix, a 33-year-old man from Morris, Oklahoma, has pleaded guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter In Indian Country. The charges stem from a fatal accident that occurred on November 20, 2018.

According to the indictment, Nix was operating a motor vehicle under the influence of one or more intoxicating substances when he caused the death of Darla Nanette Maxwell. The indictment alleges that Nix’s actions demonstrated a wanton and reckless disregard for human life.

The charges against Nix were the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Ben Gifford represented the United States in the case.

Nix faces a maximum sentence of 8 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.00. The Honorable Steven P. Shreder, U.S. Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, accepted the plea and ordered the completion of a presentence investigation report.

The incident that led to the charges against Nix occurred in Indian Country, which is defined as any land within the boundaries of an Indian reservation, including any lands held in trust by the United States for the benefit of any Indian tribe or individual.
