On a sweltering New York day, May 23, 1910, Oliver Spitzer, a man with a conscience weighed down by his connection to the gigantic sugar frauds, stepped into the federal court in Atlanta. Spitzer, once sentenced to two years in prison, had been pardoned just the day before by President William Howard Taft. The pardon came with a condition: Spitzer would testify against his former associates in the American Sugar Refining Company.
