Omaha’s streets were hit by a wave of robberies this New Year’s Eve, with Marcus D. Evans, 26, facing a hefty sentence for his role in the spree.
United States Attorney Joe Kelly announced that Evans was sentenced to serve 16½ years in prison, following convictions for two counts of robbery and one count of brandishing a firearm. His supervised release will add three years after his prison term ends, with no parole available under federal law. Evans must also pay $280.00 restitution to Buck’s Inc., $151.55 to Kwik Shop, and $1,000 to Phillip’s 66.
The crime spree began at 5:58 a.m. on January 1, 2019, when Evans and two accomplices robbed Bucky’s at 2901 North 72nd Street. They made off with cash, cigarettes, and lottery tickets.
Less than an hour later, they struck again at Kwik Shop at 5929 North 72nd Street, leaving with more cigarettes, cigars, and lottery tickets after threatening the clerk with a gun, though it was never displayed.
Their third target was Phillip’s 66 at 5920 Sorenson Parkway. A quick-thinking customer saw their masked faces and laid down his own firearm, leading to a confrontation that ended with shots fired by Evans’s accomplice as they fled with store money.
Evans was caught within a day, identified by former school staff and local law enforcement. His cohorts have also faced the music; Smith has pleaded guilty, while Collins received an 18-year sentence after his own plea deal.
This case was the culmination of an intensive investigation by the Omaha Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Great Plains Violent Crime Task Force, involving a multi-agency effort to bring justice to the victims.
