Omaha’s Ronnie James Colvin, III, 22, was handed a sweeping 126-month federal prison sentence for his role in a shocking mail carrier robbery and an elaborate bank fraud scheme.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced that Colvin, the mastermind behind the theft of a postal arrow key and subsequent alterations to checks, was sentenced by Chief Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr., on August 14, 2025. The sentence includes 42 months for conspiracy to commit bank fraud, 42 months for assaulting a USPS mail carrier, and an additional 84 months for brandishing a firearm during the crime.
The grim tale began on January 31, 2023, when a USPS mail delivery man was robbed at gunpoint in Omaha. The thief made off with the key that granted access to secure postal drop boxes. Surveillance footage from nearby homes identified a black sedan speeding away from the scene of the crime.
Further investigation led to Colvin and an accomplice, Jonathan Ayer, who were caught on video cashing altered checks at ATMs and Walmart stores. The scheme involved stealing legitimate checks from the mail, altering them, and cashing them using stolen banking information. Colvin’s and Ayer’s actions resulted in a potential loss of over $4.4 million.
Colvin’s capture came on December 7, 2023, after a joint search and arrest warrant were executed at their homes. Authorities seized thousands of checks, stolen mail matter, and firearms. Colvin was sentenced to serve his time without parole, followed by a four-year term of supervised release.
In addition to his sentence, Colvin was ordered to pay $6,406.89 in restitution. The judge’s decision leaves no room for leniency in this case of brazen crime and financial deceit.
