Michael Clayton, Bank Robbery, IA, 2014

Michael Clayton, a 44-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska, has been found guilty of robbing the Citizens’ State Bank in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The verdict came on February 13, 2014, following a swift three and a half day trial in federal court in Sioux City.

The jury deliberated for about five hours before delivering their conviction on one count of bank robbery. According to evidence presented, Clayton committed the crime on February 7, 2013, making off with $11,284 from the Fort Dodge institution.

Clayton’s co-conspirator, Christopher Anderson, age not provided, played a role in the heist as well. After asking Anderson to drive him near the bank, Clayton robbed the facility and fled with a bag of cash. He then coerced Anderson into driving him to Omaha, paying the man $1,000 for his part in aiding escape.

Anderson later pled guilty to being an accessory after the fact to the bank robbery and awaits sentencing set for March 5, 2014. He faces up to a decade in prison, substantial fines, and supervised release following any term of imprisonment.

Clayton himself faces a heavy penalty with a possible maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars, a $250,000 fine, a special assessment fee of $100, and five years of supervised release after serving his prison term. His sentencing date is yet to be determined pending the preparation of a presentence report.

The investigation leading to Clayton’s conviction was a collaborative effort between the Fort Dodge Police Department, the Omaha Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
