Omaha man Zechariah Hazard, 31, was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison Monday in Lincoln, Nebraska, for receipt of child pornography — a grim fall for a man now branded a predator by the justice system. Senior United States District Judge Richard G. Kopf handed down the sentence, marking the end of a digital paper trail that led investigators through thousands of disturbing files.
The case began brewing in mid-2015 when Homeland Security Investigations in Omaha flagged an IP address tied directly to Hazard for uploading explicit child sexual abuse material. That digital breadcrumb triggered a swift response: on July 30, 2015, federal agents executed a search warrant at Hazard’s residence, seizing computers and storage devices that would later expose the full depth of his crimes.
Forensic analysis revealed more than 9,000 images and video files depicting child pornography — a horrifying archive collected and shared by Hazard between at least December 14, 2014, and the day of the raid. Authorities confirmed the material was not only downloaded but actively distributed, sealing Hazard’s fate under federal law.
Prosecutors, led by United States Attorney Deborah R. Gilg, hammered home the severity of the offense, emphasizing that each image represents real children subjected to unspeakable abuse. “This isn’t just data — it’s evidence of ongoing victimization,” Gilg stated in a press briefing following the sentencing. “Every click, every upload, perpetuates the cycle.”
The investigation was conducted under Project Safe Childhood, the Department of Justice’s nationwide strike force launched in 2006 to dismantle online networks of child exploitation. Coordinated by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), the initiative leverages federal, state, and local partnerships to track down offenders and rescue victims hidden in the darkest corners of the web.
Upon completion of his prison term, Hazard will face five years of supervised release and be required to register as a sex offender for life.
