Dr. Yashica Robinson-White, Misbranded IUD Fraud, Opelika AL, 2023

Montgomery, Alabama – Opelika OB-GYN Dr. Yashica Robinson-White, 38, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for health care fraud and introducing misbranded drugs into interstate commerce, totaling over $60,000.

The six-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court accuses Robinson-White of committing health care fraud through her practice, which provided birth control services to local patients. The charges stem from the false billing of Medicaid for intrauterine devices (IUDs) that were not labeled in English and were made outside the United States, making them misbranded under federal law.

Robinson-White purchased these IUDs from a company in Great Neck, New York. The cheaper misbranded IUDs were used instead of lawful versions, allowing her to bill Medicaid approximately $60,300 from November 2010 through April 2012.

U.S. Attorney George L. Beck Jr. emphasized the importance of ensuring legitimate drugs and products are provided under Medicaid. ‘When a doctor uses unapproved drugs, it interferes with the ability of the Alabama Medicaid Agency to deliver quality health care,’ said Beck.

This case was brought to light by the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations, which identified over 1,000 doctors and clinics across the country receiving misbranded drugs. Each count of health care fraud carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, while the misbranding count carries one year and a $100,000 fine.

Prosecuting this case are Assistant U.S. Attorney Bob Anderson, Health Care Fraud Coordinator for the District, and Assistant United States Attorney Denise Simpson.
