Grimy Times has learned that the opioid epidemic is taking a devastating toll on New Mexico, with officials from the DEA, Bernalillo County, and the University of New Mexico’s Health Sciences Center joining forces to combat the crisis.
At a press conference scheduled for Saturday, April 30, 2016, at 12:00 p.m. at a DEA Drug Take Back collection site in Albuquerque, officials will discuss the impact of the DEA’s National Take Back Initiative on New Mexico’s opioid epidemic.
U.S. Attorney Damon P. Martinez, Asst. Special Agent in Charge Sean R. Waite, Bernalillo County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins, City Councilor Diane Gibson, and Ryan P. Cangiolosi, Chief Strategic Advisor for the UNM Health Sciences Center, will participate in the press conference.
The HOPE Initiative, launched in January 2015 by the UNM Health Sciences Center and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, aims to protect communities from the dangers of heroin and opioid painkillers and reduce the number of opioid-related deaths in New Mexico.
The HOPE Initiative is comprised of five components: prevention and education, treatment, law enforcement, reentry, and strategic planning. According to officials, the initiative is a critical step in addressing the opioid epidemic in New Mexico.
With the opioid epidemic claiming countless lives in New Mexico, the HOPE Initiative’s work is more crucial than ever. Grimy Times will provide live updates from the press conference, where officials will discuss the progress being made and the challenges that lie ahead.
The press conference will take place at the DEA Drug Take Back collection site, located at 8400 Montgomery NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111. The public is invited to attend and learn more about the HOPE Initiative and its efforts to combat the opioid epidemic in New Mexico.
