Richard Kowalczyk, 46, and Eric Patrick, 31, both of Windermere, attempted to coerce a minor into engaging in sexually explicit conduct in July 2020. The married couple, who pleaded guilty in February and April 2026, respectively, were sentenced to 14 and 10 years in federal prison. The disturbing case involved Kowalczyk and Patrick engaging in a sexually graphic conversation online, discussing their interests in minors.
Kowalczyk also possessed child sexual abuse images and videos, including minors under the age of 12, on his cellphone. The investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations, with prosecution by Assistant United States Attorney Ilyssa M. Spergel.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children and identify and rescue victims.
Kowalczyk and Patrick will also be required to register as sex offenders. U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced the sentencing, which was handed down by U.S. District Judge Carlos Mendoza.
