ORONDE GABRIEL, a 37-year-old resident of New Orleans, has been charged with a federal gun charge after allegedly possessing a firearm despite being a convicted felon.
According to court documents, GABRIEL was previously convicted in federal court for conspiracy to make false statements in the acquisition of a firearm. As a result, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm.
The indictment alleges that GABRIEL had a Taurus model G2C, nine-millimeter handgun on September 27, 2021. If convicted of this offense, GABRIEL faces a maximum term of up to 10 years imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000.00, up to 3 years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, the centerpiece of the government’s violent crime reduction efforts.
The New Orleans Police Department and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives investigated the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles D. Strauss is prosecuting it.
