Fentanyl Trafficking Ring Busted in Ohio

An Orrville man has been indicted on fentanyl trafficking charges, said David A. Sierleja, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.

Kenneth L. Johnson, originally from Chicago, is accused of selling two packages containing fentanyl to a person in Orrville, Ohio on December 3, 2016, according to the indictment.

Johnson, 46, faces one count of possession with the intent to distribute and distribution of fentanyl, a highly addictive synthetic opioid that has ravaged communities nationwide.

The investigation into Johnson’s activities was led by the Orrville Police Department, Medway Drug Enforcement Agents and the Drug Enforcement Administration, with the assistance of Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron P. Howell.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt, officials said. Johnson is entitled to a fair trial in which the government will have to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

If convicted, Johnson’s sentence will be determined by the court after review of factors unique to this case, including his prior criminal record, his role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation.

The case highlights the ongoing struggle to combat the opioid epidemic plaguing Ohio and the nation. Fentanyl trafficking has become a major concern, with many communities witnessing a surge in overdose deaths and addiction.

Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information about Johnson’s activities to come forward.
