GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Miguel Angel Ortiz-Rivera, a 39-year-old El Salvadoran national, has been hit with serious charges after federal authorities caught him returning to the United States post-deportation. Ortiz-Rivera, who was last deported on March 11, 2015, stands accused of illegal reentry into the country.
Immigration officials nabbed Ortiz-Rivera on May 24, 2025, and he now faces one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. This isn’t Ortiz-Rivera’s first rodeo; he had previously been booted out of the U.S. to El Salvador in November 2011 and April 2013.
The consequences for his transgression are steep: up to two years in the clink, one year of supervised release, and a fine that could top $250,000. On top of this, Ortiz-Rivera will be shipped back across the border once he finishes serving his sentence.
According to U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and statutes, sentences are handed down by federal district court judges. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexandra W. Amrhein of the Major Crimes Unit is tasked with prosecuting this case, while United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston, made the grim announcement.
