O’Ryan Jones, Passport Fraud, Virginia 2023

A federal jury in Virginia convicted O’Ryan Jones, 54, of attempting to obtain a passport using false identifying information.

According to court records and evidence presented at trial, Jones applied for a passport in the name and using the identifying information of his brother, after having been denied a passport in his own name.

In preparation for the passport fraud, the defendant obtained his brother’s birth certificate and a driver’s license in his brother’s name featuring the defendant’s own photograph.

Jones was convicted of false statement in application for a passport and aggravated identity theft, and faces a mandatory minimum penalty of two years in prison with a maximum penalty of 12 years in prison when sentenced on December 4, 2023.

Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Julie Podlesni and Brian Samuels are prosecuting the case.
