TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – Jorge Maldonado, 52, of Oviedo, Florida, has been sentenced to 84 months in prison and ordered to pay $1,203,073 in restitution for conspiracy, wire fraud, theft of government property, and aggravated identity theft.
The sentence was announced by Christopher P. Canova, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida. Maldonado’s three tax fraud conspirators are scheduled to be sentenced later this month.
In July 2016, a federal jury convicted Maldonado and his daughter Jennifer, 29, of conspiracy, wire fraud, theft of government property, and aggravated identity theft. Co-conspirators Sharon Glover, 55, and Diane White, 54, both of Sanford, Florida, were involved in the scheme as well.
Between 2009 and 2011, the Maldonados, Jennifer and Jorge, conspired with Glover and White to obtain over $1.2 million in fraudulent tax refunds. They filed false returns, with Glover and White cashing the refund checks and depositing proceeds into the Maldonados’ accounts or delivering the cash directly.
United States Attorney Canova emphasized the impact of such fraud on honest taxpayers: ‘When fraudsters submit fraudulent tax returns, they are actually stealing from millions of honest taxpayers who fulfill their obligations accurately and on time.’
This case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Herbert S. Lindsey and Gary K. Milligan.
