SAN DIEGO – In a harrowing case of human trafficking gone awry, Sergio Josue Palomera, 23, from Chula Vista, was handed down a 71-month prison sentence today for smuggling undocumented immigrants in a manner that led to a fatal high-speed pursuit and crash.
The October 22, 2024 incident began near the U.S.–Mexico border when Palomera picked up two immigrants. Border Patrol agents spotted the suspicious activity and attempted a stop. But Palomera’s car sped through a red light in an attempt to evade capture, reaching speeds over 110 mph in a 65-mph zone.
Tragedy struck as Palomera lost control of his vehicle, causing it to roll over. One of the immigrants was ejected and died instantly, while the other suffered致命的头部受伤,当晚在医院死亡。
U.S. District Judge Todd W. Robinson highlighted the gravity of the crime, noting its devastating impact on families. U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon emphasized that the sentence reflects the severe consequences of putting profit over human lives.
“This defendant treated human lives as disposable cargo – and two people paid the ultimate price,” Gordon said.
Acting Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey Stalnaker echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the dangers associated with using human smugglers. The investigation was led by the California Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) as part of Operation Take Back America.
