Crime journalist’s gritty report: Juan Carlos Padilla Santos, a man with a sordid history of murder and drug offenses, was sentenced to 100 months in prison for illegal re-entry into the U.S. after being deported twice. The 50-year-old Dominican national’s brazen disregard for immigration laws has earned him one of the harshest penalties yet.
“Padilla Santos was previously deported after committing serious drug offenses,” said U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton. “He deceitfully exploited our immigration system, and today he faces the consequences.”
The defendant’s criminal saga began in 2010 when he was first deported following a conviction for conspiring to distribute narcotics. Undeterred by his expulsion, Padilla Santos returned to the U.S. illegally and was ordered to be removed again. His second illegal re-entry led to his 2016 murder conviction in the Dominican Republic, where he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
After serving less than half of this sentence, Padilla Santos again defied the law by returning to the U.S. He was convicted of possessing cocaine and bail jumping in 2018, resulting in his second deportation. In 2019, he faked his own death in the Dominican Republic but managed to return to the U.S. a third time, this time making false statements to immigration authorities.
“This defendant has shown a remarkable lack of respect for public safety and immigration laws,” said HSI Special Agent in Charge Ricky J. Patel. “Padilla Santos’s illegal actions have landed him behind bars where he belongs.”
In addition to his 100-month sentence, Padilla Santos was sentenced to three years of supervised release upon his release from prison.
