Lumberton Man Pleads Guilty to ID Theft

A Lumberton man has pleaded guilty to possessing another’s identification document with the intent to defraud the United States, according to a federal indictment unsealed in court. Chad Hunt, 43, made the plea in a U.S. District Court in Wilmington, North Carolina.

According to court documents, Hunt was working on a drywall contract for the United States Government in Fayetteville, North Carolina, when he unlawfully possessed and provided the valid driver’s license of another individual to one of his workers who had not received clearance to be on the job.

The worker used the false identification to access the work site on numerous occasions between June 4 and July 3, 2020, in contravention to the security protocols in place. The incident raises questions about the security measures in place at government contracts.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case, with G. Norman Acker, III, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, announcing the plea after United States Magistrate Judge Robert B. Jones accepted it.

Hunt faces a maximum penalty of 12 months in prison and sentencing is set to occur in December 2021. The plea deal marks a significant development in the case, which has been under investigation for several months.

The incident highlights the importance of security protocols in place at government contracts and the need for effective monitoring and enforcement. The U.S. Government has a responsibility to ensure that its contracts are secure and that individuals with access to sensitive information are properly vetted.
