A 63-year-old Algiers woman has been sentenced for stealing nearly $300,000 in Social Security funds, according to a federal court ruling.

Pamela Thompson, of Algiers, Louisiana, was found guilty of Theft of Government Funds, announced United States Attorney Duane A. Evans.

According to court records, Thompson had continued to receive her mother’s Social Security Administration (SSA) benefits after her mother died in 2008. The SSA determined that her mother’s monthly benefits of $2,973.20 were deposited directly into her bank account.

The investigation revealed that Thompson had access to her mother’s account and spent $297,325.70 in SSA benefits that were intended for her mother.

Thompson was sentenced to three years of probation and restitution to the Social Security Administration in the amount of $297,325.70.

U.S. Attorney Evans praised the work of the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General. The prosecution of this case is being handled by Fraud Unit Chief, Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian M. Klebba.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity when dealing with government benefits.
