Paradise Predator Gets 30 Years for Child Porn
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Bret Allan Nichols, 32, of Paradise, California, will spend the next three decades behind bars after being sentenced today to 30 years in prison for the production of child pornography. U.S. District Judge Morrison C. England Jr. handed down the maximum punishment allowed by law, followed by a lifetime term of supervised release, according to United States Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.
The case began unraveling back in December 2012 when U.S. law enforcement received a tip from the Danish National Police regarding a disturbing video. The video led investigators to a Florida couple operating a grim business: streaming illicit sexual sessions on demand. Nichols, investigators discovered, was a customer who didn’t just *request* depravity – he paid the couple in August 2012 to specifically produce child pornography and record it.
But the horror didn’t stop there. A forensic sweep of Nichols’ computer, seized during a search of his Paradise residence, revealed a digital trove of abuse. Investigators found multiple videos depicting five additional child victims, located in both Colombia and the Philippines. Nichols wasn’t just a passive consumer of exploitation; he was an active participant in a global network of abuse, preying on vulnerable children across continents.
The Florida couple involved in the initial production of the videos faced their own reckoning, receiving sentences of 29.5 and 35 years in prison in the Northern District of Florida. While Nichols’ sentence mirrors the maximum for production, the sheer scope of his depravity, reaching victims internationally, paints a chilling picture of calculated cruelty.
“Nichols committed horrendous crimes against multiple children, and the substantial sentence that the court imposed today reflects the seriousness of his crimes,” stated U.S. Attorney Talbert. “Every child deserves a childhood safe from abuse like this. Our office is committed to protecting society, and particularly children, by prosecuting cases like this.”
The investigation was spearheaded by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Assistant United States Attorney William Wong prosecuted the case. This prosecution was conducted under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 dedicated to combating the epidemic of child sexual exploitation.
