Parmelee Man Jailed For Skipping Sentencing

Adam Poor Bear, a 24-year-old man from Parmelee, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 12 months and 1 day in custody for failing to appear at his sentencing hearing.

On December 2, 2013, Poor Bear was supposed to face sentencing for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Supervised Release Revocation. However, he failed to show up, sparking a federal investigation.

The U.S. Marshals Service and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services worked together to track down Poor Bear, who was eventually indicted for Failure to Appear by a federal grand jury on December 10, 2013.

Poor Bear pleaded guilty to the charge on March 5, 2014, and was subsequently sentenced to 12 months and 1 day in custody, along with a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence on April 28, 2014. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher prosecuted the case.

Poor Bear was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, bringing an end to his attempt to evade justice.

The case highlights the consequences of skipping court hearings and the determination of law enforcement agencies to bring offenders to justice.
