Former Maryland Mayor Charged with Violent Crime
A federal indictment has been unsealed in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, charging Paul E. McGonigal, a former mayor of Glen Burnie, Maryland, with violent crime.
According to the indictment, McGonigal, 53, is accused of committing a violent crime on or about March 18, 2014, in the District of Maryland. The indictment alleges that McGonigal used a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, which resulted in serious bodily injury to another person.
The indictment was returned by a grand jury on March 18, 2014, and was unsealed after McGonigal’s arrest. McGonigal is scheduled to appear before United States Magistrate Judge Timothy J. Sullivan for a detention hearing on March 20, 2014.
McGonigal’s arrest is the result of an ongoing investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Baltimore Field Office, with assistance from the Anne Arundel County Police Department. The investigation was conducted under the direction of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland.
The indictment charges McGonigal with one count of violent crime. If convicted, McGonigal faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, followed by a term of supervised release of not more than 3 years.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys James A. Wyda and James P. Walden.
