A disturbing case of child abuse has shaken the nation, with a 66-year-old man from Brattleboro, Vermont, facing federal charges for sexually assaulting a 6-year-old child at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
The alleged victim’s father contacted the Brattleboro, Vermont, Police Department to report that his daughter had been sexually assaulted by Paul Kickery, Sr., over the course of approximately a year. The abuse occurred between July 1, 2013, and July 31, 2014, while both Kickery and the child victim were residing at Fort Leonard Wood.
The child victim disclosed the abuse to a family member about a year later. The case was investigated by the FBI and the Brattleboro, Vermont, Police Department.
According to an affidavit filed in support of the criminal complaint, the victim’s father reported the abuse to the police. The affidavit details the alleged abuse, which occurred over the course of a year.
Paul Kickery, Sr., 66, of Brattleboro, Vermont, has been charged in a criminal complaint with aggravated sexual abuse of a child. The charge is a serious one, and the case will now proceed to federal court for trial.
A U.S. Attorney’s Office spokesperson stated that the charge contained in the complaint is simply an accusation, and not evidence of guilt. The evidence supporting the charge must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ami Harshad Miller.
The alleged abuse occurred at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, between July 1, 2013, and July 31, 2014. The case is a stark reminder of the importance of protecting our nation’s children from abuse and exploitation.
