Fresno Man Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison for Pipe-Bombings
Fresno, CA – In a shocking turn of events, Paul New, 57, of Fresno, was sentenced to three years in prison for conspiracy to destroy property and malicious destruction by means of an explosive device, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith.
According to court documents, between November 2022 and February 2023, New committed a series of pipe-bombings on unoccupied vehicles and property in Fresno. The bombings damaged vehicles belonging to two auto-related businesses on Clinton Avenue. On Feb. 19, 2023, a bomb heavily damaged a vehicle used by a home health care business on Fallbrook Avenue.
The investigation into these crimes was a collaborative effort between the Fresno Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael G. Tierney prosecuted the case.
New’s sentencing comes after his co-defendant, Scott Eric Anderson, was sentenced to three years in prison on October 9, 2024, for the same crimes.
The pipe-bombings caused significant damage to property and put the lives of residents in the area at risk. The sentencing of New and his co-defendant serves as a reminder of the severity of these crimes and the consequences that come with them.
This case highlights the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies in preventing and investigating crimes. The Fresno Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives worked together to bring New and his co-defendant to justice.
The sentencing of Paul New brings closure to the victims of the pipe-bombings and serves as a reminder of the importance of community safety and cooperation between law enforcement agencies.
