GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Eight individuals, including Aaron Peila, 31, were hit with federal charges in a massive oxycodone distribution and money laundering operation. Peila, who has operated across state lines, is accused of running the show.
In Salt Lake City, U.S. District Court unsealed an indictment naming Peila and seven others—Jonas Newell, Candace Newman, Mark Jaffe, Carolyn Barrera, Kevin Lynch, Jason Junior, and Syndi Junior—for conspiracy to distribute oxycodone and commit money laundering.
The investigation, which has been ongoing for years, targets a network that distributed the drug from 2007 through 2012. Peila, currently serving federal prison time for firearms charges, stands accused of orchestrating the scheme in Utah.
Peila faces life imprisonment and a $2 million fine for engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise. The indictment also lists conspiracy to distribute oxycodone with penalties up to 20 years and fines reaching $2 million per count. Money laundering counts carry sentences up to 20 years with fines topping $500,000.
While an indictment does not prove guilt, the charges against Peila are serious, with potential consequences that could change his life forever. The investigation was led by DEA, IRS special agents, and Salt Lake City police, while the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Utah will handle the prosecution.
The suspects are scheduled to appear in various locations this week, including Idaho and Las Vegas, for their detention hearings.
