SCRANTON, Pa. – A New York man is behind bars after allegedly pulling off a brazen bank heist in rural Pennsylvania, netting a haul of $14,147 in cash.
The indictment alleges that Robert Meader, 31, of Liverpool, New York, robbed the NBT Bank on Route 11 in Great Bend, Pennsylvania, on October 13, 2015.
According to U.S. Attorney Peter Smith, the indictment was unsealed following Meader’s arrest in New York. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Karoline Mehalchick and was detained pending trial.
Meader is currently being held at the Lackawanna County Jail in Scranton, awaiting his fate. His case was jointly investigated by special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, New York.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John Gurganus will handle the prosecution. The maximum penalty under federal law is 20 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.
While Meader’s indictment is just an allegation, a finding of guilt could come with a lengthy prison sentence. The Federal Sentencing Guidelines take into account several factors, including the nature and seriousness of the offense, the defendant’s history, and the need to punish and protect the public.
