James Julius Caton, Online Enticement, North Carolina 2024

RALEIGH, N.C. – A Pennsylvania man was slammed with a 10-year prison sentence for online enticement of a minor after cops uncovered a trail of sickening text messages on a 13-year-old’s phone.

James Julius Caton, 29, of Pennsylvania, was sentenced to 120 months imprisonment followed by 60 months of supervised release for his heinous crime. The creep pleaded guilty to the charge on February 22, 2024.

The Cary Police Department launched an investigation after a mom stumbled upon the disturbing text messages between Caton and her child. Cops analyzed the kid’s phone and interviewed the victim, who revealed that Caton had first reached out to them on Omegle, a free online chat service. The conversation later moved to Snapchat and Instagram, before finally ending with sickening text messages.

Search warrants were obtained for both Caton’s and the victim’s social media accounts, where cops discovered a treasure trove of sexually explicit conversations between the two. The depraved messages included Caton encouraging the child to send him pictures of their genitals, as well as discussing meeting up to engage in sexual activities.

Caton was arrested in Pennsylvania, where he was living. His digital devices were analyzed, and cops found unrelated images and videos of child pornography on his phone.

U.S. Attorney Michael Easley made the announcement after the sentencing, praising the efforts of the Cary Police Department, the Department of Homeland Security, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Charity Wilson, who prosecuted the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The Department of Justice launched the program in May 2006, and it has been instrumental in locating, apprehending, and prosecuting individuals who exploit children online.

The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of online predators and the importance of reporting suspicious activity to the authorities. As the world becomes increasingly digital, it’s more crucial than ever to stay vigilant and protect our children from the scourge of child exploitation.
