Maryann Bowes-Dailey, Social Security Benefits Theft, Pennsylvania 2001

JOHNSTOWN, PA – A Clearfield County woman has been accused of stealing over $149,000 in Social Security benefits.

According to the indictment, Maryann Bowes-Dailey, 52, of Osceola Mills, Pa., received and converted to her own use 416 separate Social Security Administration benefit payments made to her, to which she was not entitled, between June 1, 2001, and February 28, 2013. The total amount stolen is $149,520.41.

The indictment charges Bowes-Dailey with conversion of government funds, a serious crime that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $500,000, or both. The actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie L. Haines is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The investigation leading to the indictment was conducted by the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General.

An indictment is an accusation and does not necessarily mean that the defendant is guilty. However, the charges against Bowes-Dailey are serious and carry significant penalties if she is found guilty.

Bowes-Dailey is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Her next court appearance is pending. The public is being asked to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that may be related to this case.

The case highlights the importance of monitoring government benefit payments and reporting any suspicious activity to the authorities.
