Ernest L. Thomas II, Federal Gun Possession, Florida 2024

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Pensacola’s Ernest L. Thomas II, 35, has been slammed with federal charges for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition. The Department of Justice’s United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, John P. Heekin, dropped the bombshell charges this week.

Thomas faced arraignment before United States Magistrate Judge Zachary C. Bolitho on September 23, 2025. His jury trial is set to kick off on November 10, 2025, in Pensacola. If convicted, the former Pensacolian could be looking at up to fifteen years behind bars.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Christopher C. Patterson is leading the prosecution.

Despite the serious allegations, an indictment is merely an accusation by a grand jury and does not prove guilt. Thomas, like all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a national initiative to combat illegal immigration, dismantle cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and protect local communities from violent crime. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida is one of 94 offices dedicated to these efforts under the Department of Justice.
