PENSACOLA, FL – Dillon Devontrez Royster, 31, is trading Pensacola streets for a federal prison cell after receiving a 10-year sentence for dealing meth and illegally possessing firearms. The sentence, handed down by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida, closes a case highlighting the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and violent crime in Northwest Florida.
Federal prosecutors say Royster was found with a staggering 1,851 grams of methamphetamine, along with 10 grams of fentanyl and an arsenal of firearms during a raid on his residence on April 17, 2024. The bust was the culmination of a joint operation between the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Royster had previously pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon – charges that carry significant penalties.
U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin didn’t mince words, framing the case as a victory in the larger “Take Back America” initiative. “I applaud the substantial efforts of our state and federal law enforcement partners to investigate, arrest, and help bring this drug trafficker to justice,” Heekin stated. He further tied the case to the Trump/Bondi promise to aggressively pursue criminals, declaring, “We will not stop until we have rid our streets of these criminals who peddle in violence and addiction.”
The ATF echoed the sentiment, with Assistant Special Agent in Charge Cheryl Harrell labeling the outcome “a huge win for public safety.” Harrell emphasized the danger posed by armed drug traffickers and lauded the collaborative effort of law enforcement agencies in removing Royster from the community. “Armed drug trafficking is a serious crime,” she stated, “this investigation demonstrates what can be accomplished when law enforcement agencies work together.”
The “Take Back America” program, a nationwide initiative, aims to dismantle cartels, eliminate transnational criminal organizations, and address violent crime. It streamlines resources from the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN), effectively focusing federal power on dismantling criminal networks. This case is a clear example of that strategy in action.
Assistant United States Attorney Jeffrey M. Tharp prosecuted the case. Those seeking access to public court documents can find them on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida website. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida, one of 94 nationwide, continues to serve as the primary litigator under the direction of the Attorney General, signaling a continued commitment to aggressive prosecution of federal crimes in the region. Royster’s decade behind bars sends a message – dealing poison and packing heat won’t be tolerated in Northwest Florida.
