Perjury Convict Sentenced to Year in Prison

John S. Alphas, 57, a Chelsea produce distributor, has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison for perjury and obstruction of justice.

Alphas was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin to serve his sentence consecutively with a 15-month federal sentence he is currently serving for an unrelated insurance fraud scheme, and a fine of $5,000.

The charges stem from a series of lawsuits filed in federal court in Boston from 2010 to 2012, where Alphas filed fraudulent appeal bonds.

According to court documents, Alphas created less expensive bonds, altered them, and then filed the forgeries with the court. When one of his counterparties discovered his fraud in 2013, Alphas filed a false declaration about the bond with the court and testified falsely in a court hearing.

Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb and Harold H. Shaw, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Field Division, made the announcement.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Pérez-Daple of Weinreb’s Criminal Division prosecuted the case. Alphas’s actions demonstrate a clear disregard for the law and a willingness to deceive the court, earning him a severe sentence.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity in all dealings, especially in the courtroom. Alphas’s sentence is a consequence of his actions, and it is a warning to others who would seek to deceive the system.
