MONTGOMERY, AL – Shedrick D. Hollis, 40, of Phenix City, is facing a potential life sentence after a federal jury found him guilty of drug trafficking and weapons charges, U.S. Attorney George L. Beck announced today. The conviction stems from a 2011 raid that exposed a significant drug operation hidden within a Phenix City residence.
The trouble began in late February 2011, when the U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force (GCRFT) received a request from their Atlanta counterparts to locate and arrest Hollis. He was wanted for violating parole related to prior cocaine distribution and trafficking violations in Georgia. Local law enforcement, including the Phenix City Police Department, joined the hunt, quickly zeroing in on a rented vehicle associated with Hollis at a Phenix City address.
On March 1, 2011, the GCRFT descended on the residence. Identifying themselves as law enforcement, officers knocked and announced their presence. When Hollis refused to open the door, officers breached it, taking him into custody after he resisted commands to comply. A protective sweep of the premises immediately revealed a disturbing arsenal: a loaded shotgun and rifle stashed under the bed in a north bedroom, alongside a plastic bag filled with a substantial amount of marijuana and drug scales.
The Metro Narcotics Task Force was called in, and after securing a search warrant from Russell County Circuit Judge Al Johnson, a more thorough search uncovered even more evidence. Authorities found a blue children’s backpack packed with a large quantity of cocaine powder, bags of BZP (a club drug similar to Ecstasy), multiple bags of powder and crack cocaine, additional marijuana, scales contaminated with drug residue, and a staggering $5,000 in cash – all in $100 and $20 bills.
Hollis now awaits sentencing before United States District Judge W. Keith Watkins, with a potential life prison term looming. The case was a joint effort, investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Metro Narcotics Task Force, with crucial support from the Russell County Sheriff’s Department and the Phenix City Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Susan R. Redmond and Jared Morris prosecuted the case. Anyone with information related to federal crimes in the Middle District of Alabama is encouraged to contact the U.S. Attorney’s Office at usaalm.press@usdoj.gov or (334) 551-1755.
