Pittsburgh Man Pleads Guilty to Gun Possession Charge
PITTSBURGH – A city resident has pleaded guilty to violating federal firearms laws, sparking concerns about public safety in the Steel City.
Phil Bradford, 24, pleaded guilty to one count of violating federal firearms laws before Senior United States District Judge David S. Cercone. According to court documents, Bradford knowingly and unlawfully possessed a firearm despite having a prior felony drug conviction.
Federal law prohibits anyone with a felony conviction from possessing a firearm, and Bradford’s actions have left many questioning the efficacy of gun control laws in the region.
The government was represented by Assistant United States Attorney Heidi M. Grogan, who will push for maximum penalties in the coming months. Bradford’s sentencing is scheduled for July 25, 2019 at 1 p.m.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police conducted the investigation that led to Bradford’s prosecution. The case highlights the ongoing struggle to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons in Pennsylvania.
Under federal sentencing guidelines, Bradford could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both. The sentence ultimately imposed will depend on the seriousness of the offense and Bradford’s prior criminal history.
