Brian Wright, the chilling moniker of a Philadelphia crime boss, was today meted out a 21-year sentence for orchestrating a sex trafficking ring that preyed on vulnerable young women. The 40-year-old’s reign of terror came to an end as he pleaded guilty to three counts of sex trafficking by force. United States Attorney Zane David Memeger announced the harsh judgment against Wright, who was also sentenced to 20 years’ supervised release and a $5000 fine. In addition, Wright is responsible for paying $631,000 in restitution and a $300 special assessment.
Joining Wright in the dock was Renato Teixeira, 26, who faced his own sentence of 8 1/2 years in prison, 20 years’ supervised release, and a $1000 fine. Teixeira’s role in the depraved scheme was no less sinister, as he too was convicted of three counts of sex trafficking by force.
The dark underbelly of Philadelphia’s West Philadelphia neighborhood was exposed when it was revealed that Wright and his co-defendants ran a brothel called ‘Club Passions.’ The defendants lured females aged 18-19 with the promise of easy money, only to subject them to heinous acts of sexual violence. Kevino Graham and Raffael Robinson, both co-defendants, have already been convicted and await sentencing.
This case was a joint effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Philadelphia Police Department Special Victim’s Unit, and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle L. Morgan is leading the prosecution of this disturbing case.
Wright’s and Teixeira’s convictions send a clear message that sex trafficking will not be tolerated in Philadelphia. The victims of their cruel acts now have some measure of justice, but the fight against such criminal enterprises continues. As these men face decades behind bars, the city of Philadelphia hopes to move one step closer to eradicating this monstrous practice from its streets.
