ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – Phillip Duran, a 33-year-old former U.S. Postal Service employee, has been brought to justice for his crimes. Duran pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of destruction of mail in federal court yesterday.
Duran was charged with unlawfully opening mail not directed to him while he was employed as a U.S. Postal Service officer. The crime allegedly took place between November 19, 2015 and January 7, 2016, in San Miguel County, New Mexico.
According to the information, Duran intentionally opened other people’s mail when he was not supposed to do so. This reckless behavior has now landed him in hot water.
Duran was sentenced to one year of probation and ordered to pay an $800 fine. This is a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Eva M. Fontanez is handling the case, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service conducted the investigation.
