Phillips Sentenced for Stabbing Son

A 60-year-old man from Walthill, Nebraska, has been sentenced to 33 months in prison for a violent crime. Mark Phillips, 60, was found guilty of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and was sentenced by the Honorable Lyle E. Strom, Senior Judge, in the United States District Court in Omaha.

The stabbing occurred on September 21, 2012, when Phillips attacked his adult son with a kitchen knife, leaving a 3 centimeter wound. The victim was treated for the injury and released from the hospital.

The scene of the crime fell within the Omaha Indian Reservation, giving federal jurisdiction to investigate the matter due to Phillips’ status as a Native American. United States Attorney Deborah R. Gilg praised the efforts of the Omaha Tribal Police and the FBI for their investigation of the case.

Phillips will serve 33 months in federal prison, with no parole available in the federal system. Upon his release, he will begin a 3-year term of supervised release.
