Marcos Monarrez Jr, Fentanyl Distribution, Arizona 2024

Four Arizona residents have admitted guilt in a massive federal drug trafficking ring that included the distribution of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine. The defendants, including Marcos Monarrez Jr., are facing substantial sentences, with Monarrez Jr. potentially receiving life imprisonment.

In court documents, it was revealed that Monarrez Jr. served as a co-leader of the Phoenix-based Monarrez Drug Trafficking Organization, obtaining hundreds of pounds of meth and millions of fentanyl pills from Mexican suppliers. He then distributed these drugs across the country, including into western Pennsylvania, while using drug proceeds to fund further trafficking operations.

Erivan Guerrero, another defendant, was charged with conspiring to commit money laundering by using bulk currency obtained from drug sales to conduct financial transactions. Donald Garwood and Jesus Aaron Garcia were also part of this transnational criminal operation, with Garwood being intercepted on a federal wiretap obtaining quantities of the drugs they distributed.

The defendants will face sentencing in November 2025, with Monarrez Jr. scheduled for December 5, 2025. The law mandates life imprisonment for him, while the others face sentences ranging from at least ten years to life in prison and fines up to $10 million.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, which has been targeting transnational criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking and money laundering. Assistant United States Attorneys Arnold P. Bernard Jr. and Tonya S. Goodman are prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Laurel Highlands Resident Agency and Homeland Security Investigations, with support from various local law enforcement agencies including the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation and United States Postal Inspection Service.
