Anthony Conrardy, Oxycodone Distribution, Michigan 2023

Two Michigan physicians have been hit with heavy sentences following their convictions for running a massive oxycodone distribution ring. Dr. Anthony Conrardy, 61, and Dr. William McCutchen III, 46, were found guilty of unlawfully distributing Oxycodone and Dilaudid by a federal jury in Detroit.

The jury’s decision followed an intense eight-day deliberation after a four-week trial before United States District Judge Arthur J. Tarnow. The duo faced charges for writing prescriptions outside the scope of professional medical practice, for no legitimate purpose, and in exchange for cash payments.

United States Attorney Daniel L. Lemisch, joined by top federal agents from the DEA, FBI, HHS-OIG, and IRS-CI, announced the convictions. The trial marked the culmination of a multi-year investigation into the Meghnot Comprehensive Center for Hope, a clinic that operated as a pill mill on the Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti border.

Dr. Conrardy was convicted of five counts, while Dr. McCutchen III faced four counts. Both face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $1 million per count. The operation generated nearly $4.5 million and distributed over 1.5 million oxycodone pills.

Dr. Shardchandra Patel, 72, and Lillian Meghnot, 86, who previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy, healthcare fraud, and money laundering, were key figures in the scheme. The clinic charged $250 for a thirty-day supply of narcotics, catering to drug-seeking individuals.

The convictions underscore the government’s commitment to dismantling pill mills and combating prescription drug abuse. Assistant United States Attorneys Charles J. Kalil II and Patrick J. Hurford led the prosecution.
