Detroit Man Pleads Guilty to Fentanyl Distribution

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – In a stark display of the federal government’s commitment to cracking down on fentanyl distribution, Sylvester Roosevelt McNeil, also known as ‘Juan,’ 50, from Detroit, Michigan, has pleaded guilty to distributing deadly fentanyl.

Court documents and statements reveal that on August 27, 2022, McNeil sold approximately 1.3 grams of the lethal substance to an informant on Nickel Plate Road in Huntington. The sale has landed him in hot water, as he now faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison.

Scheduled for sentencing on May 8, 2023, McNeil could also be subjected to three years of supervised release and a staggering $1 million fine. United States Attorney Will Thompson was quick to commend the diligent work of both the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Cabell County Sheriff’s Department in bringing this dangerous drug dealer to justice.

United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers presided over the hearing, with Assistant United States Attorney Joseph F. Adams representing the prosecution. The investigation into McNeil’s crime was a collaborative effort of the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), a comprehensive initiative aimed at dismantling major drug trafficking organizations since 1982.

OCDETF’s mission to identify, disrupt, and dismantle significant criminal organizations has been pivotal in protecting public safety and economic stability. Today, the program combines resources from various federal agencies with state and local law enforcement to tackle threats head-on. McNeil’s case is a testament to their unwavering dedication.
