BUFFALO, N.Y.– Prescription pills are piling up in homes across New York, but U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. and DEA Resident Agent in Charge Michelle Spahn want to change that.
On Saturday, October 26th, the 7th National Take Back Initiative will take place from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., giving residents a chance to prevent prescription pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of expired, unused, or unwanted prescription drugs.
The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked.
So far, Americans have turned in nearly 2.8 million pounds—almost 1,409 tons—of prescription drugs during the first six National Take Back events since September 2010. Over 27 tons were collected in Western New York, representing one of the highest in the nation.
The DEA is also working on implementing the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010, which will allow an “ultimate user” to dispose of controlled substances by delivering them to authorized entities.
”Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high and indicate that almost twice as many Americans (6.8 million) currently abuse prescription drugs than the number abusing cocaine, hallucinogens, heroin, and inhalants combined,” said U.S. Attorney Hochul.
