South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation will host a critical conference aimed at tackling the alarming issue of gun violence in Indian country, as announced by U.S. Attorney Randolph J. Seiler. Set for Thursday, April 6th, this half-day event is part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and serves as a call to action against gun-related tragedies.
Keynote speaker Michael Poindexter, the Sheriff of Modoc County in California, will share his harrowing experience as one of the first responders during the tragic 2014 mass shooting at a tribal council meeting. Four tribal members, including the Tribal Chairman, lost their lives in the attack. Sheriff Poindexter’s story serves as a stark reminder of the profound impact of gun violence on communities.
Cheryl “Renee” Bourque from the Bureau of Indian Affairs will also address attendees, sharing her personal loss after two close friends and colleagues were killed by gun violence while serving at the Seminole, OK sheriff’s office. The conference will also feature Frank Kelsey with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, providing insights on addressing gun violence and its consequences.
The event will be marked by a display/information booth from several local victim service providers, offering resources and support to those affected by crime in Indian country. A poignant ceremony will follow, honoring four individuals who have made outstanding contributions to supporting victims of crime within the community.
Taking place at the SuAnn Big Crow Center in Pine Ridge, the conference runs from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm, followed by additional presentations for National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. The public is warmly invited and a free lunch will be provided to attendees.
