Pine Ridge Man Pleads Guilty to Assaulting a Federal Officer
Kevin Ray Apple, a 38-year-old man from Pine Ridge, South Dakota, has pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal officer during a traffic stop on May 21, 2012. Apple’s guilty plea was made during a hearing before U.S. Chief District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken on March 8, 2013.
According to the investigation, Apple assaulted an Oglala Sioux Tribal Officer with a vehicle during the traffic stop. The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety conducted the investigation.
The maximum penalty for Apple’s conviction is 20 years of imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman.
A presentence investigation has been ordered, and a sentencing date has been set for June 11, 2013. Apple was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.
