Pine Ridge Man Sentenced for Assault Resulting In Serious Bodily Injury
A brutal attack in Pine Ridge has led to a 46-month prison sentence for a local man. On April 2, 2013, Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken of the U.S. District Court handed down the sentence to 50-year-old Alphonso Belt.
Belt was convicted of Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury in connection with a stabbing that left his friend paralyzed. The incident occurred on November 2, 2011, at Pine Ridge, while the two men were drinking.
According to the investigation, Belt stabbed his friend in the neck with a knife, resulting in paralysis and limited mobility below the chest. The charges against Belt were brought by a federal grand jury on November 15, 2011, and he pleaded guilty to Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury on December 18, 2012.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Belt was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal after the sentencing.
The victim’s family expressed relief that the perpetrator has been held accountable for his actions. "This sentence is a testament to the importance of holding individuals accountable for their crimes," a family member stated.
Alphonso Belt will serve 46 months in prison and will be subject to 3 years of supervised release. He has also been ordered to pay $100 to the Victim Assistance Fund.
