In a bizarre case, a Pine Ridge man has been sentenced to 3 years of probation for shooting and killing a pregnant cow.
George Ecoffey, a/k/a Richard Daniel Ecoffey, age 52, was sentenced on July 22, 2014, by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court. According to court documents, Ecoffey and another man shot the cow on February 9, 2013, near Manderson.
The charge of Larceny was brought against Ecoffey after a federal grand jury indicted him on February 19, 2014. He later pled guilty on March 28, 2014.
Ecoffey’s sentence includes a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and restitution in the amount of $2,200. The investigation into the case was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich prosecuted the case. The bizarre nature of the crime has left many in the community questioning the severity of the sentence.
As part of his probation, Ecoffey will have to adhere to certain conditions, which include regular check-ins with his probation officer and any other requirements determined by the court.
While some may view Ecoffey’s sentence as too lenient, others see it as a fair outcome given the circumstances of the case. The incident has sparked a wider conversation about animal welfare and the enforcement of laws related to animal cruelty.
The sentencing of Ecoffey marks the end of a long and complex case that has garnered significant attention in the region.
