Pine Ridge Thief Walks Free
A Pine Ridge man has been acquitted of stealing over $1,000 in government property, a federal jury decided in Rapid City on February 27, 2015.
Daigre Douville, 51, was accused of embezzling, stealing, and converting overtime payments in excess of $1,000, as well as falsifying a government document.
The charges, which dated back to an indictment by a federal grand jury on March 18, 2014, were prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office after an investigation by the Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of the Interior.
According to court documents, Douville allegedly misused government funds, leaving a trail of deceit and corruption in his wake.
The acquittal has raised concerns among local law enforcement officials, who worry that the verdict may send the wrong message to potential thieves.
U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the acquittal, but declined to comment further on the case.
Daigre Douville’s acquittal is a stark reminder that justice is not always served, and that some crimes may go unpunished.
