Pine Ridge Woman Jailed for Assaulting Tribal Officer

A shocking incident of assault on a tribal officer has come to light in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Pamela Belt, a 49-year-old woman, was sentenced to 3 years of probation and ordered to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and a $250 fine.

According to investigators, the assault occurred on June 10, 2012, near Oglala. Belt physically resisted an Oglala Sioux Tribal officer as he was attempting to arrest her. In a desperate bid to escape, she also hit and kicked his car windows.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman was responsible for prosecuting the case.

The sentencing was carried out by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken of the U.S. District Court on September 12, 2013. Belt’s actions have sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the need for greater accountability and adherence to the law.
