PITTSBURGH, PA – Marquis McMeans, a 21-year-old Pittsburgh resident, is facing a potential life sentence after being indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession. The indictment, unsealed today, alleges McMeans was caught red-handed dealing crack cocaine while simultaneously breaking the law by possessing a weapon.
According to the three-count indictment announced by Acting United States Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman, McMeans allegedly possessed with intent to distribute a quantity of crack cocaine on or about July 5, 2021. The charges further state that McMeans possessed a firearm in direct connection to this alleged drug trafficking crime – a move that significantly ratchets up the stakes.
This isn’t McMeans’ first brush with the law. As a convicted felon, he is already legally prohibited from owning or possessing any firearm. Federal law doesn’t mess around with repeat offenders, and the combination of drug dealing and gun possession carries a hefty penalty.
If convicted on all counts, McMeans faces a minimum of five years and a maximum of life in prison. He could also be slapped with a fine of up to $1,500,000. However, the actual sentence will be determined based on the severity of the offenses and any prior criminal history, according to Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Christopher M. Cook. The investigation was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, highlighting a coordinated push to clean up the streets. Both agencies contributed significantly to building the case against McMeans.
