PITTSBURGH – In a stunning turn of events, Omari Patton, 44, has been found guilty on five counts related to attempting to deliver drug-soaked papers, commonly known as ‘K2 paper,’ within federal prisons. United States Attorney Cindy K. Chung announced the verdict yesterday.
The jury deliberated for just over an hour before returning their decision. Patton, a former resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was tried in front of United States District Judge William S. Stickman, IV in Pittsburgh.
According to the evidence presented, Patton, who was incarcerated at Fort Dix, New Jersey, instructed his son, Dashawn Burley, to mail five envelopes to him and another inmate. The envelopes were designed to look like legal mail from a fictitious attorney, but they contained potent synthetic drugs known as ‘K2 paper.’
Mr. Burley, residing in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, has already entered a guilty plea to two counts of attempting to provide the drug-soaked papers to a federal inmate.
Sentence for Patton is scheduled for June 15, 2023, with a maximum of 50 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $1,250,000. Burley’s sentencing is set for June 8, 2023, with a potential sentence of 20 years and a fine of $500,000.
The prosecution team, led by Assistant United States Attorneys Craig W. Haller and Rebecca L. Silinski, secured the conviction. The multi-agency investigation, spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Administration, IRS, federal Bureau of Prisons, and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, was also instrumental in bringing Patton to justice.
