PLACERVILLE, CA – Richard Clifton Turner, 62, is trading the quiet hills of Placerville for a federal prison cell after receiving a 16-year sentence for running a methamphetamine distribution operation. U.S. District Judge Dale A. Drozd handed down the sentence today, effectively ending Turner’s career as a drug trafficker, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith.
The bust went down at Turner’s Placerville residence, where federal agents executing a search warrant uncovered a staggering 40 pounds of methamphetamine. That’s enough to poison a significant portion of El Dorado County, and Turner was clearly looking to profit from the misery. But the drugs weren’t the only illegal items found. Agents also seized six firearms, one of which had already been reported stolen – a clear indication Turner wasn’t too concerned with following the law.
Turner’s criminal history is extensive. With five prior felony convictions already under his belt – including vehicle theft and previous drug offenses – he was already legally prohibited from possessing any firearms. This wasn’t a first-time offender making a mistake; this was a repeat criminal brazenly flouting the law and endangering the community. The fact he had a stolen weapon just adds another layer of recklessness to the case.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, bringing together the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the U.S. Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management. Assistant U.S. Attorney Adrian T. Kinsella skillfully prosecuted the case, piecing together the evidence that led to Turner’s conviction and lengthy sentence.
This case wasn’t just about taking down a drug dealer; it was part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a broader initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across the country. Launched in May 2021, PSN focuses on building trust with communities, supporting local organizations, and strategically targeting enforcement efforts – and putting away criminals like Turner for a long time.
The 16-year sentence sends a clear message: trafficking in methamphetamine and illegally possessing firearms will not be tolerated. Turner’s attempt to flood the streets with poison and arm himself despite his criminal past has earned him a substantial prison term. While this conviction won’t solve the drug problem overnight, it’s a significant blow to one operation and a step towards making the neighborhoods of El Dorado County a little bit safer.
