PLACERVILLE, CA – Richard Clifton Turner, 62, is trading the Sierra Nevada foothills for a federal prison cell after being sentenced to 16 years behind bars for running a significant methamphetamine operation. U.S. District Judge Dale A. Drozd handed down the sentence today, following a probe led by multiple federal agencies.
The bust went down at Turner’s Placerville residence, where agents executing a federal search warrant unearthed a shocking stash: over 40 pounds of methamphetamine. That’s enough to poison a small city. But the drugs weren’t the only illegal items discovered. Law enforcement also seized six firearms, one of which had been previously reported stolen – a clear indication of Turner’s complete disregard for the law.
Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith didn’t mince words, announcing the sentencing and highlighting the severity of the crime. Turner wasn’t some first-time offender either. He’s a repeat felon, with five prior convictions including vehicle theft and – predictably – previous drug trafficking offenses. This should have been a red flag for anyone doing business with him.
The investigation, a coordinated effort by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management, paints a picture of a well-established operation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Adrian T. Kinsella successfully prosecuted the case, bringing Turner to justice. This wasn’t a spontaneous act; it was a calculated attempt to flood the streets with a dangerous and destructive drug.
This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The Department of Justice recently bolstered PSN, emphasizing community trust, support for local organizations, strategic enforcement, and measurable results. While PSN sounds good on paper, it’s the boots-on-the-ground work of agencies like those involved in the Turner takedown that truly make a difference.
Turner’s 16-year sentence sends a message: trafficking methamphetamine and illegally possessing firearms will not be tolerated.
